  1. 1652-1715. English explorer and hydrographic 
  2. surveyor who circumnavigated the world three 
  3. times. He was born in Somerset, and went to 
  4. sea in 1668. He led a life of buccaneering
  5. adventure, circumnavigated the globe, and
  6. published his New Voyage Round the World in
  7. 1697. In 1699 he was sent by the government
  8. on a voyage to Australia and New Guinea, and
  9. again circled the world. He accomplished a
  10. third circumnavigation 1703-07, and on his
  11. final voyage 1708-11 rescued Alexander
  12. Selkirk (on whose life Defoe's Robinson
  13. Crusoe is based) from Juan Fernandez in the S
  14. Pacific.
